TWO children are fighting for their lives after a car ploughed through a barrier and overturned.

All the passengers were taken to hospital after the shocking crash at 6pm yesterday evening.

The two children, aged 13 and 11, are in a critical condition at Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary.

The adults involved in the crash have injuries that are not though to be life threatening.

Police were called to the A184 near Newcastle and stopped traffic while they dealt with the horror accident.

The Redheugh Bridge was closed for more than three-and-a-half hours as the scene was cleared and investigations carried out.

Along with cops, fire crews and five ambulances were called as well as a support unit from the Great North Air Ambulance.

Tyne and Wear Rescue Service confirmed to the Chronicle Live[1] the incident had concluded before 7pm but the bridge remained closed until about 9.40pm.
