BMW 325i Sport Rally Car For Sale (1987)

1987 BMW 325i Sport rally car

Here we have a BMW E30 3-series rally car, originally built in 2007 from a 325i Sport for the BMW Challenge and the Colin McRae forest stages. As a rally car, it is built with competition in mind and is by no means a showroom queen, but as you can see it is clean and tidy with straight shell and panels, with good quality preparation.

Having been in storage for the last five years, the owner asked us to recommission it which involved rebuilding the engine and improving the wiring on the car, as well as giving it a check over and full service.

The engine has been rebuilt using new main and big end bearings, new rings, a reconditioned head, new water pump, thermostat, etc. It has a Kent race cam and the engine has been remapped to suit. There is a Cobra single box exhaust, K&N filter and a large M3 radiator to keep it all cool. We anticipate it has something in the region of 200bhp, come and have a drive it is certainly exceptionally healt hy!

To complete the detail on the rest of the drivetrain there is also competition engine mounts the gear linkage has been rebushed and the rear axle is located with heavy duty PDL competition bushes. Drive is through a 325i Sport CR gearbox and 4.46 CWP, there is also a BMW LSD with english plates so ideal for rallying or track days.

In terms of safety preparation there is a proper twenty point Safety Devices roll cage which goes through the front bulkhead to the suspension turrets, and also picks up on the rear shock towers. The shell has been seam welded at the front and rear damper mounting points, and there is a heavy duty steel fabricated engine to cross member mount. As you would expect, there is also a sump and gearbox guard. The spare wheel well has been plated over, and the sunroof fixed shut.

The fuel lines are braded and routed along the top of the gearbox tunnel. All the safety cut offs are present and correct as per the necessary regulations, as is a 2.25l lifeline extinguisher, which will require a service to bring it up to date.

The car is currently fitted with a lightweight bonnet, boot and doors, with perspex all round - the original bonnet, bootlid and doors including glass are supplied as spares with the car.

In terms of brakes we have cross drilled vented disks to the front, and solid discs at the rear, with braided hoses. There is an adjustable bias valve. In addition to the standard handbrake, we have a hydraulic fly off in an upright position.

The car has an E46 steering rack conversion which importantly gives less turns lock to lock as well as improved feel. The dampers are Bilsteins with Eibach springs (to challenge spec) and the track control arms and ball joints are all new, fitted with rose jointed or HD PDL bushes. The camber and castor angles are adjustable. There is an extended wheel stud conversion front and rear.

Inside there is a suede steering wheel, Terratrip trip meter which runs f rom a sensor on the front wheel, co-driver's footrest, flat door cars with pockets and Corbeau Revenge Kevlar seats with Luke harnesses.

In terms of spares, in addition to panels already mentioned, there is a gearbox and diff, various clocks, lights, leads and plugs, 7 moulded slicks (approx ¾ worn) and 14 gravel tyres, most mounted on alloy wheels.

The car is road legal and MOTed till Feb 2018.

This car drives well and feels quick, with a nice short gearshift and relatively few rattles for a competition car, with a solid and together feel to all the controls. The suspension is currently in a gravel style setup, making it approachable on the road.

If you are looking for a track toy, the car is ready to go, although you could stiffen it up a little and lower it, if you are chasing lap times. Alternatively, if you want to return it to competition use, new belts and seats will be required as they are sadly out of date, in addition to the required service for the extinguisher.

In summary the car has all the right ingredients with no gimmicks and should prove reliable. The out-of-date items requiring attention for a return to rallying are reflected in the price, giving a solid base for you to finish to your own specification. We're confident if you're in the market for a well prepared E30, then it represents excellent value, you could not replicate the build on this car for anywhere near the asking price.

Car is located near Kenilworth, West Midlands. Delivery may be possible at extra cost.
