GREEN BAY, Wis. (WLUK) -- Green Bay Police were called to a crash involving a 13-year-old driver Wednesday night.

The crash happened on Cherry Street, near Irwin Avenue, just after 8 p.m.

Police say the 13-year-old took his brother's car without permission. There were four other people inside the car, all juveniles.

"They weren't only endangering themselves, but the public," said Cmdr. Jim Runge, with the Green Bay Police Department.

Police say an officer was on his regular patrol route near Doty Street when a car went flying by.

"As he was patrolling around, a car goes past him at a very high rate of speed, he estimated 70 miles an hour or so," said Runge.

Runge explained the car wasn't only going fast, it was also driving erratically and blowing through stop signs.

The officer finally caught up to the car, but it had already crashed into a tree and rolled over.

"This could've been tragic, very tragic, a 13-year-old behind the wheel driving that fast, with three of his buddies, it could've been real bad," add Runge.

The 13-year-old driver is in custody in a juvenile facility and two others in the car were taken to the hospital for minor injuries.

Three out of the four juveniles were found at or near the scene. One of the juveniles was able to get away but was found at his house about 30 minutes after the crash.
