The search for possible occupants of a car that crashed into the Buller River on Saturday will resume at daylight on Sunday.

Police staff, divers and six search and rescue volunteers spent several hours on Saturday until darkness fell, searching an area of the river after a member of the public raised the alarm.

A Police spokesperson said they received a call at 4.50pm that a car had crashed into the Buller river at Lower Buller Gorge Road.

"It is unknown if anyone is in the vehicle," they said.

A witness said divers were searching for the car and a dog, believed to be from the car, had been rescued from the wreckage.
