Car Free Day to give pedestrians free reign over Midtown, Washington Heights streets
Cars are getting the boot in Manhattan this Earth Day.
Car Free Day returns to the city for a second year this Saturday in Midtown and Washington Heights.
Pedestrians will have the run of the traffic-cleared streets, where they can catch an outdoor performance, go on a walking tour, dive into arts and crafts and take a Citi Bike for a free spin.
Cars will be banished from Broadway between Union Square and Times Square, and St. Nicholas Ave. from 181st St. to 190th St., from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

"Car Free Day is back in a big way this year, where we'll see even more streets open to people instead of clogged with cars," said City Councilman Ydanis Rodriguez (D-Manhattan), who helped organize the first Car Free Day last year. "We're encouraging New Yorkers to leave their cars at home for the day and commute by bike, bus, train or walking. Moving more sustainably can seriously reduce our impact on the environment and the one planet we have."
Around the boroughs, the city Department of Transportation's Weekend Walks program will offer community events to strolling New Yorkers on closed-off streets in Morrisania in the Bronx, Astoria and Woodside in Queens and Brooklyn Heights.
