Car battery theft a big problem

Zone 7 Residents' Representative Committee (JPP) chairman Datuk Inder Singh Beant Singh says residents must report crimes to the police no matter how small they may seem.

Zone 7 Residents' Representative Committee (JPP) chairman Datuk Inder Singh Beant Singh says residents must report crimes to the police no matter how small they may seem.

THE theft of car batteries in Taman Kinrara, Section 5, Puchong has become more rampant over the past three months.

Residents in the neighbourhood are complaining that the stolen car batteries are from locally-made vehicles.

Abdul Majid Cheku Mohamed, 60, a resident of Jalan TK 5/5 for 20 years, said the car batteries from his Perodua Kancil along with his neighbour's Kenari were stolen recently.

"I changed my car battery only the night before, but when I woke up in the morning, I could not start my car.

"Last month, my neighbour's car battery was also stolen.

"I think it must have been done by a professional because there was not a scratch on my car and we did not hear anything," he said.

Puchong Umno vice-chairman and Jalan TK 5 /6 resident Zaulkefli Ahmad said a total of six victims had come forward with complaints.

"There are more battery car theft cases, especially at the low-cost flats of Pangsapuri Mawar.

"The police have patrolled the area in the past but it was not frequent enough, and the streetlights in this neighbourhood are also not working.

"Most of these cases take place at midnight and the wee hours of the morning," said Zaulkefli, who has lived there for 27 years.

Kinrara Zone 14 Residents Representative Committee (JPP) secretary Lawrence Chiew said residents in the area should be more vigilant.

"If they are able to afford it, they should consider installing CCTV cameras in their homes.

"They should also form a neighbourhood watch and work with the police on patrolling their streets," he said.

He added that the residents should make a report to the police at once if they see anyone carrying car batteries at night or behaving suspiciously.

None of the car bettery theft victims made police reports.

JKP Zon 7 Residents Committee president Datuk Inder Singh Beant Singh said the residents must report these crimes to the police no matter how small they are.

"When I asked the residents why did they not make police reports, they said they did not think it was a big issue.

"The residents need to understand that the reports will help the police keep track of the crime pattern and investigate accordingly," he said.
