TCS calls for better car security

The Swiss motoring organisation, the TCS, is calling on car manufacturers to ditch keyless entry systems until the security is improved.

Keyless entry systems work by the owner only needing the key-fob on their person. When the owner approaches the car – it will unlock automatically, normally only by touching the handle.

But the TCS is warning the system can be hacked easily.

One method is used by a pair of thieves working together. One follows the owner with a radio amplifier in their pocket – and the other approaches the car with the receiver. The car gets the signal from the fob, bounced through the amplifier – and unlocks.

If the car is then stolen, there's no evidence of a forced break in which can create problems for an insurance claim.
