Ssangyong Rexton 2017 - New SUV could be crucial in reinventing the Korean brand
Ssangyong's new flagship car will bear the Rexton name
Korean car manufacturer Ssangyong has been teasing the release of a new flagship car for a number of weeks and today they confirmed it would be called the Rexton.
The car was developed under the project name of Y400 and seen as the LIV-2 concept at the Paris Motor Show in September 2016.
This new car will use the 'Rexton' name and inherits some of the original car's DNA.
It will still be a large SUV, like the original, but it has been redesigned and refined.
The next generation Rexton is one of Ssangyong's most important releases in recent years and they will look to make it their flagship vehicle.
Ssangyong has looked to renew and reinvent the brand's image over the last few years, which started with the latest Tivoli that was released last year and the Rexton will be integral component in continuing that process.
The exterior of the new SUV looks more muscular, bolder and more premium than its predecessor.
In a market segment with a lot of competition Ssangyong needed something bold to compete, and the smart and sharp looking new Rexton, certainly has plenty of appeal.
It's worlds apart in terms of styling from the old Rexton.
It feels fresh and modern and does certainly not look like a budget option vehicle like the older model did.
The interior is significantly more luxury and premium than its predecessor
The SUV will also be available with four-wheel drive and is said to be a solid off-road vehicle with huge towing capacity, making it extremely practical.
Its Quad-Frame body-structure uses 1.5Gpa giga-steel, which is said to provide superior strength and reduce weight.
The new flagship SUV will sit above the Koronado in Ssangyong's range and is slightly larger.
Rexton is 4,850mm long, 1,920mm wide, 1,800mm high and has a 2,865mm wheelbase.
The new Rexton has received a significant boost in tech
Inside the SUV, Ssangyong has focused on a complete overhaul of the design and tech.
Higher-quality materials and design have been used inside the car and the layout and design has been refined to make it feel smarter and more premium.
In additional to this the new Rexton will feature Apple Carplay and Android Auto with device mirroring, 3D Around View Monitoring (AVM) and a wide 9.2-inch HD screen.
Ssangyong will unveil the new SUV at the Seoul Motor Show later this week.
Pricing for the new Rexton is expected to be under £30,000 in the UK and it will go on sale in the UK at the end of 2017.
If this SUV is fun to drive it could be one of the surprises of the year.
